In February 2012 Kilfinane OEC in conjunction with Mountaineering Ireland, County Limerick Local Sports Partnership, County Cork Local Sports Partnership and South Tipperary Local Sports Partnership will be launching the Ballyhoura Climbing Project.
The aim of this project is to establish a Rockclimbing Club which will be affiliated to Mountaineering Ireland. The club will be based at Kilfinane OEC and have access to our Indoor Rockwall.
The club will benefit from the assistance of all the above partners in starting out & a number of supports are planned to assist the club including:
· Training for Club Leaders in Climbing Leadership, Climbing Coaching skills, First Aid & Child Protection
· Start up assistance from Mountaineering Ireland such as club affiliation, insurance for the initial start up project, training, equipment grants etc.
· Training & Use of Climbing Wall at Kilfinane OEC
· Assistance in club development & training from the Local Sports Partnerships
· A summer training programme to help the club to progress to crag climbing outdoors
The climbing club will aim to have at least 50% female participation and will be open to adults and children aged 6/7+, most likely with separate time sessions for different age groups on the same evenings.
In establishing such a club the most important factor will be the number of adults who are prepared to help out in a leadership capacity and help develop the club. We are looking for adults who would be interested in helping out as club leaders.
Club leaders would be involved in developing the club from the start, would organise and lead climbing sessions & take responsibility for different roles within the club. Previous climbing experience is an advantage but not essential as full training would be provided by Kilfinane OEC & Mountaineering Ireland. The most important requirement is that club leaders would be able to commit to fairly regular attendance for club sessions ( most likely 1 evening a week) .
